During 2010 a total of 129 inspections were held on fruits and vegetables, both locally produced and imported. All samples were randomly picked from the marketplace.

Answering a parliamentary question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis, who had asked about such inspections to monitor the amount of pesticides present, Consumer Affairs Minister Jason Azzopardi said the tests had been carried out in an accredited laboratory in Sicily.

Each test had cost €110 for a total outlay of €14,190.
