Low-cost airline Easyjet is to introduce paid-for allocated seating for all flights.

Passengers will have the option to choose from three brands of pricing – €15 (front row and exit row), €10 (front seats) or €4 (any other seat).

Those who purchase up-front or extra legroom seats will have access to the speedy boarding check-in desk and be the first to board.

Anyone who chooses not to pay to select their seat will be given their seat number when they check in, either online or at the airport.

Easyjet trialled allocated seating during the summer season to stress-test the new systems and procedures.

The budget carrier said last Wednesday it would roll out allocated seating during the winter season when fewer people travel to ensure a smooth transition from one system to another.

The roll-out will take place on all routes through November.

Easyjet added that the trial showed that allocated seating could be delivered “at the same time as maintaining strong levels of on-time performance and without adding cost”. Easyjet plus! annual cardholders and flexi fare customers will be able to select a seat free of charge as well continuing to enjoy speedy boarding.

Some facts from the trial flights

• On shorter journeys seat 6A was the bestseller while on longer flights it was 1A.

• On shorter journeys seat 16B was the least popular while it was 19B on longer flights.

• Passengers preferred seats on the left-hand side of the plane with seats A, B and C outselling D, E and F.
