About €25 million in EU funds will be invested in systems that can generate cleaner and more efficient energy.

Speaking at a press conference, Parliamentary Secretary for EU funds Ian Borg said 14 projects to promote cleaner energy will benefit from the cash.

Among them, the University of Malta will have three projects worth €6 million in all, €4.7 million of which will be EU funded.

The university will build a new lab to research electricity generation from sunlight. It will also install photovoltaic panels and LED lights in several of its buildings.

Another project will be carried out by the National Sports Council, focusing on electricity generation inside the National Pool Complex at Tal-Qroqq, which will also be used to heat the pool in winter. This €1 million project will be half funded by the EU.

The Ministry for Energy and Water Conservation will implement five projects worth €15 million, €13 million of which will be provided by the EU.
