Malta should seek “stability in a sea of instability” in the field of irregular migration over the coming years, especially with its upcoming EU Presidency, a university professor said yesterday.

The director of the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, Stephen Calleya, said Malta and other European states must articulate clearly that the EU needs a more proactive stance on “influencing and managing relations in the Mediterranean area”.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Valletta’s Jesuit Church, Prof. Calleya said Malta had to do its utmost to persuade other EU members that European and Mediterranean security “is indivisible”.

Malta’s Euro-Mediterranean vocation was based upon the premise that there could be no peace and stability in Europe if there was none in the Mediterranean, and vice versa.

He pointed out that next year Malta will commemorate a number of important anniversaries including 50 years of independence, 40 years since it become a republic, 35 years since Freedom Day and 10 years since joining the EU.

“It is essential that these national occasions of historic importance serve as a platform upon which the profile of Malta’s Mediterranean vocation and continuous commitment to enhancing stability across the Mediterranean is raised,” he said.

This strategic objective of Malta’s foreign policy had become even more relevant in the “uncertain times we find ourselves in,” he added.
