Pluralism and freedom of the press in the EU will be given a new boost through a centre that will be set up by the European Commission and the European University Institute. The aim of this new body is to promote media freedom, including through theoretical and applied research, debates, education and training activities.

Known officially as the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom, it will be also responsible for monitoring media freedom in EU member states and making recommendations to the Commission.

The new institute has been given a grant of €600,000.
