The European Parliament Information Office in Malta, in collaboration with Euro Media Forum, is presenting a three-day film festival between Wednesday and Friday at St James Cavalier, Valletta.

The three finalist films in the run for the European Parliament Lux Prize Competition 2013 will be shown during the festival. Entrance is free, and each film will be screened twice. A light reception in between the daily showings at 6pm and 9pm will be held. Attendees can cast their vote for their favourite picture.

The three contending films are:

Miele (Honey) (18) by Valeria Golino – France, Italy (2013). Irene lives a pretty isolated life. Her clandestine job is to help terminally-ill people to die with dignity by giving them a drug. One day she supplies a new ‘client’ with a fatal dose, only to find out he is perfectly healthy. Irene is determined not to be responsible for his suicide.

The Broken Circle Breakdown (15) by Felix Van Groeningen – Belgium (2012). The film tells the love story of Elise and Didier. She has her own tattoo shop; he plays the banjo in a band. It is love at first sight in spite of major differences. He talks, she listens. He is a profound atheist, at the same time a naïve romantic. Their happiness reaches a climax with the birth of their little girl Maybelle. But this joy is short-lived as Maybelle soon falls seriously ill. Didier and Elise respond in very different ways. The Broken Circle Breakdown examines how love can sometimes conquer fate, and sometimes not.

The Selfish Giant (15) by Clio Barnard – UK (2013). This is a contemporary fable about 14-year-old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own community, the boys meet Kitten, a local scrapman, and begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. Swifty has a natural gift with horses and Arbor has a business brain and a way with words and thus they make a good team. But when Arbor begins to emulate Kitten by becoming greedy and exploitative, tensions build, leading to a tragic event which transforms them all irrevocably.
