San Ġwann Primary A recently participated in e-twinning projects with partner schools in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Romania, Belgium, Norway, Iceland, Italy, Slovenia, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Turkey.

The projects focus on two main themes: two Year 1 classes are working on the topics of culture and tradition; a kindergarten class, meanwhile, is focusing on the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

The culture projects are entitled ‘Building the cultural bridges of friendship’, ‘Dancing our way through tradition’ and ‘Customs and traditions around Europe’.

These projects aim to find out what different cultures have in common, to exchange national traditions among European countries, and to highlight the similarities and differences between cultures within Europe.

As part of these projects, Year 1 students from San Ġwann Primary A have sung traditional Maltese carols, prepared typically Maltese Christmas treats, danced Il-Maltija, played Maltese games and talked about village feasts.

During Carnival, they made two small floats out of recycled material and used them to make a stop-motion film to represent the King Carnival float which traditionally leads the Carnival parade. This project placed first in the national eTwinning Carnival Competition.

The children are also taking part in a project about transport and Easter.

The other theme, ‘Adopting a healthy lifestyle’, which is being worked on by kindergarten students, is a cross-curricular approach aimed at instilling healthy habits in young children.

Project activities included planting tomatoes and beans, separating waste to promote a cleaner environment, organising a cereal day and a fruit day as well as a fun day focusing on physical activities, to which parents were invited.

Children shared the knowledge acquired with e-twinning partners mainly through the e-twinning website.

The e-Twinning National Support Service has awarded the National Quality label to these projects.
