A drunken Libyan man jumped into the sea and broke his left leg after he panicked when the police tried to arrest him for allegedly being in possession of cannabis on Monday morning.

Munir Ali Gammudi, 32, from Tripoli, living in St Julian’s, was brought into court yesterday in a wheelchair after being arrested at 4am by police in St Julian’s.

He pleaded not guilty to aggravated possession of cannabis, committing the crime within 100 metres of a place frequented by minors, disobeying police officers and being drunk in public.

He was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000 and a deposit of €500.
