A Palestinian man who lives at the Ħal Far tent centre was placed on a three-year probation programme after pleading guilty to using foul language in church.

Khalid Ali Omar, 24, admitted entering Christ the King Church in Paola during a function on Saturday at around 6.30 p.m., drunk and swearing at the sacristan.

Mr Omar also admitted he damaged a telephone box for which he was fined €100.

The prosecution asked for probation, adding Mr Omar had a drinking problem and had even tried committing suicide at the lock-up.

Defence council Joseph Ellis appeared for the accused.

Magistrate Edwina Grima presided over the case, while police inspector Spiridione Zammit prosecuted.
