A drunken man who challenged police officers to a fight at his local police station was in a sobering situation yesterday as he stood in court charged with assaulting the officers.

Jeffrey Cassar, 29, from Mosta, yesterday denied assaulting police constables Ronnie Marmará, Lydon Paul Spiteri and William Galea on Saturday afternoon at 4pm at the Mosta police station. Mr Cassar went to the station to sign the bail book under conditions imposed on him in another case.

Drunk, he challenged the officers to a fight, sources close to the case said.

He yesterday denied breaching bail conditions by committing the crime and relapsing by committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term and probation.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke granted him bail against a deposit of €200 and a personal guarantee of €1,500 on condition he is monitored by a probation officer.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri appeared for the accused.
