A man jailed for two years and eight months for stealing most of the jewellery adorning the statue of Our Lady of Graces in Żabbar has been sentenced to another three years in prison for trafficking heroin.

Aaron Axisa, 32, from Xgħajra, was caught by police officers who were keeping an eye on a house in Żejtun.

Daniel Mizzi was stopped as he left the house and was found to be carrying sachets of heroin. Inside the house, they found Mr Axisa and three grams of the drug. Mr Mizzi had told police he purchased the drug from Mr Axisa.

Two years ago, Mr Axisa had been jailed after he was found guilty of stealing six gold and diamond rings, two gold and diamond bracelets, two necklaces and a pair of diamond earrings, and a gold and diamond medallion from the statue of Our Lady.
