A desperate drug trafficker hell-bent on getting away from the police managed to jump out of a first-floor window after even a taser gun was used on him, it emerged in court yesterday.

The getaway of the man, who remains unidentified, happened as police officers attempted to carry out a controlled delivery of almost 800 grams of cocaine that 23-year-old Liberian Samuel Wisdom was carrying when he arrived on a flight from Brussels.

Mr Wisdom was jailed for 12 years and fined €28,000 after admitting to importing, conspiring to import and being in aggravated possession of the drugs on November 17, 2008.

In his judgment, Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano referred to the evidence given by Police Sergeant Adrian Sciberras who told the court that a controlled delivery was set up at the hotel where Mr Wisdom was meant to hand the drugs to another person. The hotel receptionist informed the police that a man had requested to speak to Mr Wisdom in room 442 and this person went up to the room and knocked on the door. Ready to make an arrest, officers opened the door only to find this person standing about six metres away and, realising they were police officers, he tried to run away and managed to push past another two officers. He ran down the corridor where he found himself cornered and, as he tried to attack them, PS Sciberras gave him a warning and shot him with a taser gun. Still undeterred, the man jumped out of an internal window and darted out of the main door of the hotel with officers in hot pursuit but he got away.

Mr Wisdom was meant to stand trial by jury but decided to admit the charges. Mr Justice Quintano noted that the accused had pleaded guilty during the compilation of evidence, which made it an early admission and, furthermore, that he had a clean police record.
