Two drug couriers were yesterday sentenced to a total of 22 years in two separate cases after they admitted to the charges instead of standing trial by jury.

In the first case, the court heard how Romanian Csaba Fazakas, 62, was arrested at the airport on April 23, 2011 after arriving on a flight from Zurich.

He was carrying cocaine worth some €190,000 which was placed in two packets and hidden inside the false bottom of his suitcase. Mr Fazakas was jailed for 14 years and fined €30,000.

In the second case, Hungarian national Nemeth Arpad was jailed for eight years and fined €23,000 for importing 57 cocaine capsules in his stomach. He was arrested on June 18 last year after flying in from Madrid.

Customs and police officers had been tipped off about him and promptly placed him under arrest. Both men reached plea bargains with the Attorney General before admitting to the charges.
