A drug addict caught by the police half-an-hour after allegedly stealing cables from a factory has been remanded in custody after denying the theft even though he was caught on CCTV.

Anthony Mallia, 38, of Marsa, refused to reveal the identity of the other men involved in the theft, Police Inspector Joseph Agius told Magistrate Carol Peralta yesterday.

The inspector said that the theft occurred at a company called Nylon Knitting. A witness recorded the number plate of the getaway car which was then traced to Fgura where the accused was arrested with the stolen items in the car.

Defence lawyer Eleanor Schembri said that her client had a drug problem, was looking for work to no avail. She added that he had a baby to support and could not cope.

Magistrate Carol Peralta noted how uncooperative he had been and said that for the court and police to help him he had to help himself by cooperating.

Mr Mallia was told he should put his child first.
