Lack of attention behind the wheel has earned one young man a €300 fine after he crashed into a friend’s car while driving behind her.

The accident happened as Kersten Borg, 22, from Marsascala, was following Kirsten Portelli along the Ħamrun bypass bridge when he thought she was about to manoeuvre on to the main road.

Ms Portelli braked on seeing an approaching car and Mr Borg drove into her. She suffered slight injuries consisting of a cut to her right eyebrow.

Mr Borg was charged with driving carelessly and dangerously, as well as involuntarily causing injuries to Ms Portelli.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri heard that the two friends were following one another, carrying friends as passengers, after the group decided to drive to Msida from Żebbuġ.

The magistrate said that from the evidence produced, it did not result that Mr Borg was driving dangerously or carelessly but it was a lack of attention that caused the accident.

According to testimony by witnesses, this was an unfortunate incident that was handled by the insurance company.

The magistrate also gave weight to the fact that Mr Borg was going to do voluntary work abroad and that he had admitted to the charges.

The prosecution did not insist that his licence should be suspended as well.
