A Gozitan bus driver is being charged with involuntarily causing serious injuries to a woman cyclist in a hit-and-run last week.

Philip Bajada, 37, from Għarb, was also accused of dangerous and reckless driving, damaging Nanette Farrugia’s property, failing to stop at the site of an incident and failing to own up to the police.

Mr Bajada was driving an Arriva bendy bus along the Coast Road in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.

Ms Farrugia, 38, had reported that after she was hit, the bus kept going at “full speed”.

She also said that the bus overtook her at a bend, leaving her with no room to manoeuvre.

The cyclist suffered fractures in her hand but when contacted yesterday she was recovering well.

Although the arraignment took place on Friday, The Times only learnt about it on Tuesday after it had asked the police for an update on the case.

The incident came almost three years after cyclist Clifford Micallef died in a hit-and-run incident on the Coast Road.

Transport Malta has said it is working on a road safety strategy that would involve protecting vulnerable road users such as cyclists.
