A driver who ignored a stop sign and drove onto a main road, causing a crash that seriously injured her passenger, yesterday got the blame for the accident and the other driver was cleared of the charge.

It was actually Godwin Desira, 31, from Żejtun, who had been charged with seriously injuring passenger Marie Therese Vella.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli heard that the other driver, Carmen Demicoli, drove onto St Catherine’s Road from Toni Zahra Road on July 18, 2010.

Ms Demicoli had testified that Mr Desira crashed into her while she was waiting at the stop sign. She was looking left and right and had even looked at a roadside mirror opposite.

However, Mr Desira, who was travelling along the main road, said Ms Demicoli came out of the side road, crashed into him and pushed his car up against a wall.

Magistrate Demicoli said that from the evidence produced it was obvious that she came out of the side road ignoring the stop sign and acquitted Mr Desira.
