A driver who injured a motorcyclist after emerging from a side road was fined €700 for careless driving.

Alfred Cauchi was on his motorbike in Sanctuary Street, Żabbar, when 56-year-old Nazzareno Delceppo, from Kalkara, drove out of a road that had a stop sign and hit him, the court heard.

The accident happened on September 8, 2009, at about 3pm.

Mr Cauchi said he could see Mr Delceppo’s car at the stop sign and, in fact, hooted his horn as he got close to the car but the driver still drove out.

Mr Delceppo said he had looked before coming out of the side road but, as soon as he did, Mr Cauchi drove into him.

Mr Cauchi suffered a five per cent disability as a result of the injury.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli said she had not banned Mr Delceppo from driving because Police Inspector Fabian Fleri, prosecuting, did not insist on his licence being suspended and because he was not being found guilty of dangerous, but careless driving.
