Nature in Dreams is the title of Anthony Lucian Cauchi’s solo exhibition currently underway at the German-Maltese Circle in Valletta.

Mr Cauchi explains how this “exhibition is the fruit of my walks around Malta and Gozo. The colours and movements of the clouds always intoxicate me. The unique range of colours of the local countryside inspires a sensitive observer into expressing them through a creative medium where he, as an artist, is free to give his own interpretation of reality. And that is exactly what I did”.

Both oil and acrylic works are included in this exhibition.

Mr Cauchi is an active artist from St Julians. The Young Artist’s Group and the Teens and Twenties Talent Trust were the first venues in the 1960s and 1970s where Mr Cauchi, together with his peers started to actively participate and contribute to the art scene in Malta.

Contemporarily, he was studying art at the Government School of Art in Vallett, and later at the Msida Polytechnic. Harry Alden and Esprit Barthet were among those who taught him.

He pusued his studies at St Joseph Technical School focusing on ceramics, under the tutorship of the Ganni Bonnici.

Having been awarded a scholarship to study in Perugia, Italy in 1985, Mr Cauchi returned to study art in Italy on his own steam in 1994, focusing on the nude and pottery at the Pietro Vannucci Institute under the guidance of Bruno Orfei.

He won the bronze medal for two years in a row at the International Postal Art Competition in Lugano and Rome. During this time, Mr Cauchi was exhibiting his work in the Town Hall at Helsinki and Oxford Street Gallery in London.

He has participated in several collective shows as well as having had solo exhibitions in Malta and abroad.

After this exhibition, Mr Cauchi is planning a retrospective shows which will be held next year. This exhibition will include his latest sculptures and paintings.

• Nature in Dreams is showing at German-Maltese Circle, St Christopher Street, Valletta till November 11.
