Every so often, Transport Malta asks me to take my car for a vehicle roadworthiness test inspection. Naturally, I have to pay for the inspection.

Among the many checked parameters is the exhaust sound level of my car. I do not know the difference or significance of the “exhaust sound level” and the sound level of the motor.

Is it, however, controversial that I can be blocked from obtaining my car licence if my car fails this part of the test while a motorised bicycle, emitting so much noise that on a quiet day you can still hear it after it has travelled over 500m, is allowed to be driven on our roads?

I shall not delve into the question of other controversies such as driver age, helmets, ‘passengers’ and lighting.
