The Manoel Theatre will be treating jazz-lovers to an evening with jazz pianist and composer Dominic Galea and other professionals in this field on November 8 at 8 p.m.

Galea will present a new set of his jazz compositions in a performance with double-bass player Mario ‘Cocker’ Aquilina and percussionist Noel Grech.

The programme will also include numbers by other composers as well as improvisations.

Also taking part will be guest singer Doreen Galea, alto saxophonist Sammy Murgo, tenor saxophonist Carlo Muscat and percussionist Charles ‘City’ Gatt.

Born in 1965 to Sammy and Doreen Galea, two well-known professional musicians, Galea studied jazz piano with his father and later in London with Stan Tracey.

He also studied composition with Pawlu Grech graduating BA Honours in 2007 and MA in 2010 in Composition from the University of Malta.

Earlier this year, he became a Fellow of the London College of Music (FLCM).

Since the age of 18 he has won top prizes and awards in Malta and abroad, one of them as the youngest song-writer whose entry won the Malta Song Festival.

He has written 14 musicals, six of which received awards, a ballet Red Rose for a Ballerina.

In 2001, Galea won the Malta Music Award as best composer. He has released an album Ommi dedicated to his mother Doreen, also a songwriter, many other albums, incidental music for Joe Friggieri’s comedy Tkun darb’oħra Mikielanġ and also collaborated with his brother Benedict in the album Mnajdra Jazz Suite (2001).

Galea performs widely in jazz festivals in Malta and abroad. He lectures in Music and Pop Music at the University of Malta.
