A total of 784 persons were charged with varying types of domestic violence in 2013 and a further 778 were arraigned last year, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela told Anthony Agius Decelis (PL) in Parliament last night.

He said that, in 2013, a total of 66 persons had appeared in court for 344 on charges of loitering for prostitution purposes. Last year, the number dropped to 50 people who were arraigned 196 times.

Mr Abela said sentences included imprisonment, suspended jail terms, probation, conditional discharge, fines and rebukes or warnings.

Six were charged with rape last year, down from 13 in 2013.
