Dog lovers yesterday had plenty to yelp about as the Finance Minister announced the creation of another dog park.

Malta’s first dog park was inaugurated in May at Ta’ Qali. The 1,000-square metre facility has a range of play equipment for dogs, including cover tunnels, weave poles and canine walk ramps. The new dog park will open next year at the Marsascala Family Park.

The Government will also launch a neutering campaign for stray cats and dogs, in collaboration with NGOs.

Tonio Fenech added that the Government will also invest €250,000 to support animal sanctuaries.

Most animal sanctuaries in Malta rely on charity and some have to appeal to the public for financial help from time to time.

Just a couple of months ago, a last-ditch appeal for funds guaranteed that Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Mellieħa would continue to offer a roof, food and care to 120 dogs.

The organisation had made an urgent appeal for funds, which had dwindled, a situation that would have forced the sanctuary to fold in a matter of days.

Mr Fenech mentioned the opening during this legislature of Ċentru San Franġisk, which provides animal welfare service throughout the day, a 24-hour ambulance service and the introduction of dog micro-chipping.
