Pilate gave the mob a choice of who should go free: Jesus Christ (the one who preached love, forgiveness and the importance of family values) or Barabbas (notorious for riot, murder and corruption of families). Inflamed by the high priest Caiphas and other members of the Sanhedrin Council, the masses favoured the wrecker of families and demanded the death of Jesus.
Within a matter of weeks Maltese society will be recreating the referendum requested by Pontius Pilate; how many of us will behave like the rabble: blind to the bigger picture, ill-equipped to stand up to pressure, succumbing to wrongful demands and washing our hands of sound values?
Will history repeat itself?
