Franco Debono stated in his press conference that he would not have accepted a ministerial appointment because of the short period remaining for the current legislature. By voting against the government he would be excluding himself from re-election and would not have the opportunity outside of Parliament to pursue the reforms he would like to see happening in the Constitution, justice, party financing and libel laws among others.

On the other hand the Prime Minister also stated that these same areas merit further discussion for reforms to be drafted. Both political parties do not seem eager to go to elections at this point in time. So why not propose a work plan to the House Business Committee with timelines for discussion, consultation and legislating the reforms in the various areas, while Dr Debono withdraws his threat of outvoting the government? Could this could be a solution to the current impasse?
