The General Workers’ Union has declared an industrial dispute with the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs as it tries to secure improvements in the conditions of work of correctional and immigration officers.

The union said the majority of the two groups of workers had become union members. It was now seeking information on the contracts of detention officers and on the structure of the employment grades of immigration officials and their remuneration.

However, it accused the ministry of dragging its feet in talks and was not prepared to accept any more delays.
