I am in full agreement with Gaetano Mallia (June 28) and as a resident at Tal-Balal, l/o San Ġwann, L-Iklin and Birkirkara, together with my wife and family I share his discomfort and annoyance.

I do appreciate that the residents in the vicinity of Tal-Balal are not a dying breed but, nevertheless, this should not deprive them of enjoying a peaceful day, evening and night in their homes and – as a minimum – expect to have the same rights as “turtle eggs” when it comes to excessive noise and loud music at all times of the day and night (including early afternoon to late evening and late evening to early morning up to 4 a.m. and, sometimes, even later) and on most days of the week, especially in summer.

I have also been complaining to the authorities for nearly 30 years but, instead of improving, the situation is getting worse and worse. The latest development in this long and never-ending saga is an extension of the disco premises into an adjoining field, hitherto used as a parking lot for the disco customers and now developed to include bars and cloakrooms, a shallow swimming pool as well as steel and aluminium structures used for lighting, sound and vision.

As a result of this extension, the number of amplifiers and speakers have been increased, emitting an even greater disturbance to residents living in the area.

In the year 2002, or thereabouts, about 160 residents living in the area had signed a petition to protest against this great disturbance. However, this popular protest must have fallen on deaf ears.

Perhaps the time has come to again collect signatures and, hopefully, succeed in stopping this illegal nuisance once and for all.
