The directors of Island Bunker Oils Limited, three of whom are charged over the oil procurement scandal, have reached a settlement with an employee after he was injured in an accident, a court heard.

Anthony Cassar, 62, from Tarxien of Cassar Ship Repair, Francis Portelli, 62, of Virtú Ferries, former Enemalta chairman Tancred Tabone, 59, from Sliema, Joseph Pandolfino, the former Enemalta chief financial officer and Godfrey Massa, 44, from Mtarfa were charged with causing the involuntary serious injury of Gilbert Galea on May 29, 2010. They were in court yesterday.

The case revolves around an accident in which Mr Galea injured his hand while operating a large truck at the Gudja Depot, Tal-Lampat in Gudja. The directors of the company were also charged with health and safety contraventions.

Mr Galea, who works for Island Bunker Oils, was paid compensation by the company for the injuries he sustained. Albert Libreri, for Mr Galea, said his client was renouncing all interest in the case.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia deferred the case to another sitting where it was expected to be declared extinguished.

In a separate case, Mr Cassar and Mr Portelli are pleading not guilty to bribery, being an accomplice in a crime committed by a public official and money laundering. Mr Tabone stands charged with bribery, corruption and money laundering.
