Maltese karting driver Gianluca Dingli recently represented the country at the Super Rok World Finals in Lonato, Italy.

Dingli was coming from a very successful season after winning the Sicilian Regional Championship. He also figured prominently in an Italian Championship race that was held in Siena last month.

Dingli left a good impression in Siena and was contacted by Fernando Alonso Team who invited him to race for them in the World Finals.

His contract with BRM was still active but Dingli still received the green light to take on this new challenge.

After days of contacts and hard thinking, Dingli discussed matters with his new team manager Maurizio Capuzzo and mechanic Giacomo Balistreri and then decided to give it a try.

Competition in Lonato was very tight.

In fact, there were 75 drivers in Dingli’s class alone. The Maltese racer still managed to qualify for the finals following a qualifying session of varying conditions, from drizzle to warm misty weather.

Dingli was classified eighth on the starting grid and for half of the race he was as high as fourth and trying to gain further position.

However, his engine developed problems in the final laps and he had to settle for 11th place in the final classification.

The Fernando Alonso bosses were satisfied with Dingli’s performance and he was also asked to join the team next season.

Their proposal is still being considered by the young Maltese racer who was assisted by Kunsill Malti għall-iSport and a host of other sponsors this season.
