I refer to Ivan Fenech’s remarks on Manwel Dimech (March 10). To comment on the relocation of a monument or the facelift of a square is one thing but to flaunt utter ignorance about a historical figure is quite another.

If no expert literature existed, both in Maltese and in English, to clearly show who Dimech was, someone like Fenech could be possibly excused.

But to ignore all the research done, to persist in one’s prejudices and to parrot inanities is not worthy of anyone. If Fenech does a little bit of reading he’ll perhaps discover just how unjust and inconsiderate he was in belittling Dimech with such recklessness.

And since I am at it, I might as well give my view on the relocation of Dimech’s monument. Not only do I think that it should definitely remain at Castille Square but also that it should not be removed from its central location.

With all due respect, Dimech represents something which is ideologically and morally by far superior to what any politician might represent. By putting his monument to a side (or conceal it with trees, for that matter) just proves the stuff of politicians.
