The cinema at the Gozitan Don Bosco Oratory has been upgraded to a new digital system.

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo said that families, children and young people would all benefit from the new system.

At present, the cinema at the Victoria oratory is the only operational one in Gozo.

Through ministry and government funding, the upgrade includes a Dolby 7.1 surround system.

Two years ago, Gozo’s only commercial cinema, the two-screen Citadel Cinema in Victoria, closed down, leaving the Don Bosco Oratory as the only option for Gozitan families to watch family films on a Sunday afternoon. However, this closes each year from May to October.

Citadel closed its doors as Hollywood studios accelerated their push to have all films released worldwide solely in digital format rather than 35mm and upgrading the screens would have cost thousands of euro.

However, last year, the government set up a scheme to help fund the industry’s conversion from film to digital.
