Narrative Structures, in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Health and the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Department, organised two talks to mark World Health Day.

The topic, diabetes, was remarkably supported by the Malta Diabetes Association, the Maltese Paediatric Association and the Malta College of Family Doctors.

Robert Lustig, a world-renowned paediatric endocrinologist, neuroendocrinologist, professor of paediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and president of the Institute for Responsible Nutrition, was invited as keynote speaker.

A talk entitled ‘What is metabolic syndrome and why are children getting it?’ was held for medical doctors at the Aula Magna in Valletta, while another talk for the public, entitled ‘Diabetes and processed food: a failed experiment’, took place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Prof. Lustig shed light on the problem Malta was increasingly facing with obesity, saying “sugar causes diabetes in the same way that cigarettes cause lung cancer... processed food is an experiment that failed – there is only one answer – real food”.

The event was supported by MSV Life, Arena, H2 Only, ATG and Pharmachemic and the Times of Malta was media partner.
