The government has ordered an inquiry that will look into detention services following the death of the Malian migrant and also in view of recommendations made by past inquiry boards.

In a statement soon after three men appeared in court in connection with Muhammed Abdella’s death, the Office of the Prime Minister underscored the principle of the presumption of innocence but also the need for a person’s dignity to be fully respected and fundamental human rights to be protected and upheld.

“The government is worried and concerned when extreme and racist elements rear their heads. These do not represent the values of our people,” the government said.

However, the statement did not give the composition of the inquiry board.

The Labour Party welcomed the news of the inquiry, adding that it should also look into all the aspects of the management of detention and open centres.
