My wife and I have just returned from our regular annual visit to Sliema; as warm and friendly as ever – and a pleasure to gaze out at the creek where my ship moored so many times in World War II. However, I was greatly saddened to note three signs of desecration: the vandalising of the three-seated figure group in Bisazza Street, the damaging of two of the small plinths at the base of The Strand war memorial and the graffiti on the otherwise pristine walls on the creek side of Tigné Point.

A few weeks ago, a reader suggested that the graffiti on Valletta’s City Gate be preserved as an example of present-day ‘art’. Heaven forbid that should happen as it would only encourage others to display their scrawls.

The War Memorial damage is particularly tragic as, with the surrounding untidy vegetation, it is a clear indication that today’s generation has little interest in commemorating its past heroes.

Is there no local organisation that could rectify the situation?
