Q: I paid a €50 deposit on a wedding dress. A few days later I was browsing the internet and saw the same dress marked €700 cheaper. On paying the deposit, I was clearly told that should I change my mind, I would lose the deposit. Since I decided to cancel the purchase a few days after paying the deposit, does any cooling-off period apply?

A: Since you placed your order at the shop, there is no cooling-off period. The right of cancellation only applies to distance and off-premises contracts. Even though you found the same dress much cheaper from another seller, the law does not give you the right to cancel the order and claim back your deposit. Hence, in this case if you decide to cancel the order, the seller has every right to retain the deposit paid. The seller may also oblige you to continue with the sale and purchase the wedding dress.
