The end of the European football championship brought temporary relief from the onslaught upon the Maltese language by the Maltese commentators. It seems that our language, so beautifully used by Maltese writers, is being shunned by these commentators who prefer to employ corrupted Italian and English words than Maltese.

Apparently, we are to accept as part of our language such words as miċidjale, inseriment, atteġġjament, andament, vertikallizza and direct translations such as kollox regulari, l’arbitru and other derivatives in both Italian and English words.

If our commentators stop describing what the viewer sees and exercise better imagination then we could hear and learn more about our language. One might argue that our language could be enriched by the assimilation of foreign words. Unfortunately, I have not heard any of the words above uttered in a context other than football.

I am sorry to sat that the results of all the games played was Maltese Football Commentators 1 - The Maltese Language O.
