Labour Deputy Leader Toni Abela is to head a committee that will oversee the organisation of activities, publications and a monument dedicated to former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

Dr Abela, who was appointed to the task by Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat, will be working with the Mintoff family to prepare a full programme to be published in the coming weeks, the Labour Party said.

When contacted, Dr Abela said it was not possible to give more details about the monument or publications at this point as they had still to be approved by the committee that would hold its first meeting within the next two weeks.

Only the activities, commemorations and publications drawn up by this committee would be officially recognised by the Labour Party, the party said in a statement.

Activities organised outside the official programme did not have the recognition of the party or of the Mintoff family, it added.
