A decision on the resolution to devolve land in Pembroke to the Chinese government, for the building for a new embassy, was put off again yesterday evening because no plans were tabled for consideration by the National Audit Office Committee.

In the committee’s last sitting a fortnight ago, it had postponed the decision because it wanted the Chinese embassy to present a building envelope of its proposed facility.

Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Michael Falzon yesterday reported to the committee that the embassy had made a commitment in writing that it would follow all the necessary laws and procedures, and the land would be used to construct an embassy. It added that the construction would be limited to an embassy compound.

The embassy also said it could not present any plans since these would be drawn up once the land had been purchased.

Tonio Fenech (PN) said that he would refer the matter to the Opposition parliamentary group, which was meeting yesterday evening.
