Nationalist MP Franco Debono is today expected to file a private member’s motion of no confidence in Health Minister Joe Cassar.

The MP yesterday told The Times he would file the motion regardless of the outcome of the PN executive meeting on his candidature later last night.

“I will file the motion irrespective of whether the PN executive overturns its ban on my candidature or not,” he said.

Dr Debono said the motion would focus on three recent controversies that arose within the health sector involving ambulances, the appointment of consultants and the Oncology Department.

The Health Department recently admitted to hiring ambulances that did not meet contractual specifications. It also came under fire regarding the appointment of consultants who were nominated despite not having fulfilled the necessary criteria.

More recently, the head of the Oncology Department lashed out at Dr Cassar’s handling of this sector, claiming there was too much political interference and expert advice was consistently ignored.

Stephen Brincat also spoke against the introduction of chemotherapy in Gozo, claiming the hospital was responsible for chemotherapy toxicity deaths several years ago. Dr Debono has also called on the police to investigate his claims.

Earlier this year, Dr Debono helped to oust former Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici by supporting a motion of no confidence tabled by Labour.

Last year he had also threatened to support a no-confidence motion in Transport Minister Austin Gatt over the public transport reform, but stopped short and abstained.
