Opposition leader Simon Busuttil should treat former minister Giovanna Debono the way he did former ministers Michael Falzon and Ninu Zammit, Labour Party deputy leader Toni Abela said.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday to mark the PL’s two years in government, Dr Abela said that following police investigations that Ms Debono’s husband used public funds to carry out free construction works for her constituents, the former minister should no longer remain an MP.

“The Manuel Mallia case resulted in his dismissal,” Dr Abela said, referring to the former home affairs minister and the shooting incident involving his driver.

“Ninu and Michael were dispensable for Dr Busuttil. He should act as the Prime Minister acted in the Mallia case – what is he waiting for?”

No action had been taken against shadow minister Toni Bezzina following allegations he made civil servants sign a false declaration, Dr Abela added.

The government was taking all the necessary steps to address the failings highlighted by the Auditor General’s report regarding Café Premier’s bailout and was currently working on a programme to implement the Auditor General’s recommendations, he said.
