The number of people killed on the roads between July and September has tripled in a year.

There were six road fatalities in the third quarter of the year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday. Two of them were pedestrians, both females. All four motorists who died were males.

A total of 3,555 accidents were reported, similar to the corresponding period last year.

The NSO said 421 people were injured in the accidents, including 251 drivers. Of these, 208 sustained slight injuries and 39 suffered grievous injuries. Another 23 people – seven passengers and 16 pedestrians – suffered grievous injuries and 145 – 94 passengers and 51 pedestrians – were slightly injured.

The highest number of accidents and the highest traffic casualty rate occurred on Mondays.

The lowest was on Sundays, with 404 cases. Saturdays topped the highest casualty-to-accidents ratio.
