Between 1995 and 2012 22 residents of Malta and Gozo passed away in cases considered to have been caused by influenza.

The greatest numbers of cases were in 2000 and 2009, but there were none in 2011 and 2012.

Answering a parliamentary question by Justyne Caruana (PL), Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia said there were also substantial numbers of cases admitted to hospital with influenza complications, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma attacks and shortness of breath.
