A new storage virtualisation solution by American company DataCore is now officially available in Malta.

DataCore said it provides the industry’s only next-generation storage virtualisation software solution that enables IT organisations to eliminate the ‘Big Problem storage-related barriers preventing them from making the best of their investment in virtualisation.

DataCore is for the first time being represented in Malta through Micro Technology Consultancy Limited, local official distributor of DataCore’s products.

DataCore is a privately-held company headquartered in Florida, and with offices around the world. It started in 1998 as the industry’s first storage virtualisation software company and today has over 140 employees, serving over 6,000 customers worldwide, including Microsoft, Lufthansa, Canon, Toshiba, Novartis, Ikea, and Daimler Chrysler.

Put simply, DataCore makes software that optimises your storage infrastructure for the demanding requirements of server and desktop virtualisation.

“Malta is a small country but it has a highly-developed ICT infrastructure and industry. Therefore you cannot afford to have a lot of servers. You need to virtualise,” explained to i-Tech Regis Chauffpied, DataCore technical account manager for Malta, who is based in France.

“Why is DataCore’s software solution ideal for Malta? It fits tight budgets, which is a major consideration for small-to-mid size companies. It makes better use of the available storage and there is no need to have more servers than necessary. It also supports cloud computing, the exciting new path for ICT around the world.”

DataCore takes a “software-as-infrastructure” approach to storage virtualisation. This is the same approach that that VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft take for server and desktop virtualisation.

“We are a software company, not storage hardware. Our software works on every type of storage disk by any manufacturer and with the major operating systems. We are hardware neutral. Our customers pay once for the intelligent storage-optimisation software and run it on the hardware of their choice,” explained Mr Chauffpied.

DataCore’s software is intended to eliminate unforeseen storage-related problems that get in the way of server and desktop virtualisation plans. In fact it takes care of the three major job of infrastructure-wide storage management: capacity management, performance management and data protection management.

SANsymphony-V is DataCore’s flagship product. It is infrastructure software, not storage, and its most important benefit is that it enables data centres to use existing equipment and conventional storage devices through an intuitive interface.

“We have already had a healthy number of queries and the feedback so far is very good,” says Philip Cortis, managing director of Micro Technology Consultancy Limited, the sole authorised distributor of DataCore software in Malta.

The distributor is planning to hold specific training in the sales and technical support of DataCore software in Malta in the coming weeks.
