The Tal-Qroqq road tunnel is among Malta’s tunnels that are dark, with weak lighting and black walls. One has to strain one’s eyes to see the kerb as one drives through these tunnels and into the contrasting bright sunlight outside them.

This is in contrast with the situation inside the Taormina road tunnel in Sicily, which is appreciably longer than ours, is very well lit with frequent orange lights and has spotless white walls, affording light to the drivers of vehicles negotiating it.

The St Julian’s and Santa Venera road tunnels are slightly better than the one at Tal-Qroqq.

Black walls and weak lighting do little to enhance clear visibility in these tunnels or to prevent road accidents.
