Residents of a Sliema apartment block woke up to find pieces of concrete had fallen from a balcony of a neighbouring hotel and landed on the steps at the entrance.

The concrete formed part of the base of a balcony on the sixth floor of the Chalet Hotel on Tower Road.

A man who lives in the block said the concrete fell at night as a result of the heavy rain and strong winds.

He was concerned because the debris fell on the steps and the pavement in an area popular among pedestrians.

Thankfully, he said, the incident happened at night and during bad weather when nobody was walking in the area, so no one was injured.

The police were informed about the incident yesterday morning and cordoned off the area to ensure pedestrians did not walk underneath the balcony.

Times of Malta contacted the hotel but was told that the manager was not available for comment.
