The third model in the Citroen DS range has been presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, arriving in Europe for the first time after its Shanghai Auto Show debut four months ago.

With an interesting exterior design, combining a crossover, a wagon, a sedan and an MPV, the Citroen DS5 is sharing the same platform with its Peugeot “brother”, the 3008.

The DS5 is using the Hybrid4 powertrain, combining a 2.0-litre diesel engine delivering 160 bhp and an electric motor with 37 hp, driving the rear wheels. The Hybrid4 technology is giving birth to a new all-wheel drive system, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The DS5’s powertrain is “driven” by a central command unit which is optimizing the diesel-electric torque for lower fuel consumption. The driver can choose between four modes: the auto (the unit is constantly changing automatically between the electric motor and the diesel); ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle, running on the electric motor on speeds up to 60 km/h); 4WD (front wheels are powered by the diesel and rear wheels by the electric motor) and Sport (optimising the powertrain for high performance).
