Tarxien cub scouts recently took part in an education walk and clean-up event as part of an Environment Day activity organised with Nature Trust (Malta) at Pembroke.

The cub scouts followed the old military footpath and Nature Trust president Vince Attard gave them a talk about the different fauna and flora found in this ecologically important site. They also learned about the nearby watchtower that is being restored and the function of similar towers around Malta in time of wartime.

The cubs then divided into groups and cleaned around the bathing area and the road, collecting plastic, metal or paper waste.

In all, over 50 garbage bags of waste were collected in just over one hour from only a very small area.

Plastic tanks full of burned oil were also found under a nearby tree.

With the support of the Pembroke council all the waste was taken away from the site.
