Croatia midfielder Luka Modric admits their victory over bitter rivals Serbia has left the players drained heading into the World Cup qualifier against Wales.

Despite winning the battle of the Balkans 2-0 on Friday, the Real Madrid midfielder accepts it was a testing experience.

“We are emotionally drained. It’s like we have played two games in physical and emotional terms,” he said.

Today’s match at the Liberty Stadium pitches Modric against former Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Gareth Bale.

Bale has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid and Modric revealed the pair have kept in touch.

“I corresponded with Bale when I was in Madrid but not in recent days,” Modric said.

“Fortunately they will not play Aaron Ramsey (suspended) and Joe Allen (injured) because they were the best players after Bale.”
