Mater Dei Hospital’s Crisis Intervention Team last year dealt with 1,282 clients and only 169 of them needed to be hospitalised at Mount Carmel Hospital, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care Mario Galea said.

Mr Galea was visiting members of the team yesterday.

The Crisis Intervention Team started operating in December 2010 and offers support to people who experience a psychiatric crisis. The team also offers support in cases of attempted suicide and Aids patients who face mental health problems.

Mr Galea said the Government also invested in 160 mental health professionals working in the community, five day centres for people with mental health problems and six mental clinics in the community.

He said a partnership exists with the Housing Authority to help clients who complete their course of treatment at Mount Carmel Hospital but have nowhere to live.

During the Christmas period more than 80 clients used the services of the Crisis Intervention Team, Mr Galea said.
