A Polish couple who imported drugs were jailed for a total of 17 years and fined €23,000 each after pleading guilty instead facing a trial by jury.

Bartosz Jacek Goldzinski, 28, and Weronika Jakubowska, 20, were stopped by Customs officers at the airport on their arrival from Paris on October 3, 2011.

Mr Goldzinski was found to be carrying 92 capsules in his stomach and his girlfriend had one package in her vagina.

The drugs, which had a purity of 23 per cent, weighed in at 764 grams and were worth about €55,000, the court heard.

The couple pleaded guilty to conspiring to import, importing, trafficking and being in aggravated possession of the drug.

Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano sentenced Mr Goldzinski to nine years’ jail while Ms Jakubowska was jailed for eight years.
